KQ98 CARES FOR NOVEMBER: HUNGER TASK FORCE OF LA CROSSE
Written by Jesse Skelley on October 31, 2025
In 1996, a La Crosse County Health Department survey revealed a serious gap in food access for local families, sparking the creation of The Hunger Task Force. Formed to connect and coordinate hunger relief efforts, the organization quickly became a vital community link.
By 1999, it launched the Kane Street Community Garden to grow fresh vegetables for those in need. The next year, the Food Recovery Program began rescuing safe, nutritious food from being wasted, redistributing it to local meal sites and pantries.
What started as a single truck serving 19 locations has now grown into a regional network. Today, The Hunger Task Force supports more than 120 programs across Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa, distributing millions of pounds of food annually. In 2022 alone, it provided over four million pounds of recovered, fresh, and emergency food—continuing its mission to ensure no one in the community goes hungry.
