MONTANA GROUP REWARDS FOLKS FOR NOT DRIVING DRUNK
Written by Jesse Skelley on July 10, 2026
Choosing not to drive after a night out is always the right decision, and a group of volunteers in Montana is making sure those smart choices don’t go unnoticed. The Montana Barfairies have gone viral for leaving $5 coffee shop gift cards under the windshield wipers of vehicles left overnight at local bars. Instead of finding a parking ticket the next morning, responsible drivers discover a small reward for choosing a safe ride home.
The nonprofit says the idea began as a simple act of kindness in Montana’s Flathead Valley but has grown into a nationwide movement promoting stronger DUI laws while supporting families impacted by impaired driving.
Volunteers often wake before sunrise to place the gift cards on vehicles, even during freezing Montana winters. Their inspiring efforts have attracted millions of views on social media, with people applauding the creative approach to encouraging safe decisions. Sometimes a small cup of coffee is all it takes to remind someone that making the responsible choice truly matters.
@the_barfairies Everyone had an amazing time at Whitefish Winter Carnival this weekend and we are so grateful that these folks opted to leave their cars instead of driving home drunk. We had the best time giving out single use breathalyzers at the parade, and seeing all of your beautiful shining faces! #thebarfairies #montanabarfairies #quitwhileyoureahead #drunkdrivingawareness #dontdrinkanddrive
