HURRICANE KATRINA: RACE AGAINST TIME ON HULU

Written by on August 11, 2025

This year marks 20 years since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, and director Traci A. Curry’s new National Geographic docuseries, Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time, offers a gripping, deeply human look back.

The five-part series traces the storm’s arc — from the eerie calm before landfall, to the chaos of breached levees, to the harrowing rescues and tragic losses. Curry focuses on the victims: families stranded without resources, neighbors saving neighbors, and the resilience of communities left behind.

Interviews with survivors, activists, and officials — including retired Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré, credited with restoring order — highlight both acts of heroism and institutional failures.

Despite its painful history, the series closes with hope: wetland restoration projects in the Lower 9th Ward and vibrant cultural traditions proving that, even after disaster, New Orleans’ spirit endures.
