A UNIQUE SPANISH CHRISTMAS TRADITION GOES VIRAL

Some holiday traditions age like fine wine. Others — looking at you, Elf on the Shelf — can feel a little worn out. If you’re ready for something wildly different this season, allow us to introduce one of the most delightfully bizarre Christmas customs on the planet.

In Catalonia, Spain, families celebrate Tió de Nadal, which literally translates to “Christmas log.” But it’s more commonly known as the “poop log.” Yes, really.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, a wooden log with a painted face, red hat, and tiny legs is kept in the home and lovingly “fed” scraps of food. Children sing special songs about the log pooping out gifts, then — in a tradition that sounds far more fun than it should — beat it with sticks.

On Christmas Day, the blanket covering the log is lifted to reveal candy, treats, and small presents. Rooted in centuries-old yule log traditions, it’s strange, festive, and unforgettable.
