MAYBE THE 1990’S WEREN’T ALL THEY’RE CRACKED UP TO BE?

The ’90s are having a serious moment right now. From baggy jeans to revival tours, nostalgia is everywhere. But before we fully crown the decade as flawless, some Gen Xers are reminding everyone that the ’90s had plenty of downsides too.
For starters, getting locked out of the house after school meant sitting on the porch for hours with no phone and no way to reach your parents. Technology was wildly expensive, and even basic things like small TVs felt like luxury items. The news was heavy too, filled with violent crime, major tragedies, and global crises. Entertainment came with its own annoyances: late fees at Blockbuster, rewinding VHS tapes, and CD players that skipped if you hit a pothole.
Dating wasn’t easy either—calling someone meant risking a chat with their parents. Cigarette smoke was everywhere. Add in slow downloads, lost songs, frosted tips, and questionable snacks, and suddenly the ’90s don’t seem quite so perfect after all.
