LARGE EXPLOSION IN OHIO CAUSED BY METEOR

A mysterious boom that rattled homes across parts of the Midwest and Northeast has been linked to a meteor streaking through the sky over Cleveland. The National Weather Service said Tuesday the loud noise many residents heard was likely caused when the meteor broke the sound barrier as it entered Earth’s atmosphere.
Some residents initially feared the sound was an explosion, with one person telling CBS affiliate WOIO the blast shook their entire house. Reports indicated the boom could be heard as far away as parts of New York and Pennsylvania.
The NWS office in Pittsburgh even shared video of the meteor blazing across the sky, captured by one of its employees. Officials also pointed to data from a geostationary lightning mapper—an instrument that detects quick atmospheric flashes—to confirm the event.
The American Meteor Society has not yet commented on the sighting. Meanwhile, Ohio has seen several recent meteor sightings, including a fireball caught on camera earlier this month.
