Day after the Super Bowl shout out Pledge of Allegiance with DUKE at 7AM. The story of Emlen Tunnel NFL Hall of Famer. He played 1 year of College football for Toledo in the fall of 1941. Tunnel suffered a neck injury at the end of the season. After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor Tunnel tried to enlist in the Navy and Later the Army and was rejected because of the injury. He Joined the US Coast Guard and His Ship was assigned to duty off the coast of New Guinea. In April of 1944 his ship was hit by a Japanese torpedo and burst into flames. With his hands badly burned He rescued a trapped shipmate and another who had gone overboard. After the war he played one year of Football for the Iowa Hawkeyes and then went on to Star for the NY Giants for 14 seasons. There is a Coast Guard cutter named in His honor as well as a building on the Coast Guard Academy Campus. thanks to Bauer’s market and garden center for the Salute to Emlen Tunnel.
