WHY DO BABY BOOMERS KEEP BIG SECRETS FROM THEIR KIDS?
Written by Jesse Skelley on December 9, 2025
A viral TikTok has sparked a thoughtful conversation about how different generations communicate in times of crisis. Licensed therapist Mary Beth Somich, 34, recently posted a video reenacting phone calls she has observed between baby boomers and their adult children. In each skit, a parent reveals life-changing news—like a spouse’s heart surgery—only after the fact, explaining they didn’t want to worry anyone. With more than 1.2 million views, the clip struck a nerve.
Somich says many boomers were raised to believe love is shown through strength, protection, and privacy—not emotional openness. Sharing health problems or struggles felt like burdening loved ones, so withhold ing became an act of care. But younger generations view silence differently. Millennials and Gen Z value transparency, vulnerability, and frequent check-ins, so being left out can feel hurtful or like a breach of trust.
The response to Somich’s post shows just how common this disconnect is. As parenting styles evolve, bridging these communication gaps may be key to healthier, more connected families.
