TWO SELF DRIVING TAXIS CRASH, TRAP A THIRD, BLOCKS SAN FRANCISCO STREET

San Francisco saw another bizarre chapter in its robotaxi saga when three Waymo vehicles ended up in an accidental standoff on a dead-end street. According to bystander video, two autonomous cars wandered into the cul-de-sac, attempted multi-point turns, and gently collided—blocking the road entirely. A third Waymo then followed its confused counterparts and became trapped behind the mess.
Footage shows one robotaxi straddled sideways, its bumper pressed against its twin, while all three emit the eerie humming sound EVs make at low speeds. “It’s like a Waymo standoff,” one witness joked while unable to leave the area. A Waymo employee eventually arrived to manually reposition one vehicle so the others could escape.
Though the company insists the contact was “minor,” the incident adds to a growing list of eyebrow-raising mishaps involving the autonomous fleet. As Waymo’s software becomes more assertive on the road, San Francisco residents are left wondering whether the tech is improving—or just getting bolder.
