ESCAPED PET TOUCAN LOOSE IN LAS VEGAS FINALLY RESCUED
Written by Jesse Skelley on March 4, 2026
After more than three months on the loose, a missing toucan named Sam has finally been found safe in northwest Las Vegas. The tropical bird, who escaped on November 14, surprised homeowners Wednesday when he flew straight into their garage. Recognizing Sam from local news coverage, they quickly contacted Skye Marsh of Southwest Exotic Avian Rescue, bringing an end to a months-long search.
Sam was immediately taken to a veterinarian for testing. While he survived his desert adventure, he showed clear signs of wear. His beak was chipped, feathers were missing, and he appeared to have had a few rough encounters along the way.
Marsh said it’s remarkable Sam survived at all, given that toucans are native to humid climates and poorly suited for the dry Nevada desert. Even improper water can pose serious health risks for the species.
Now in quarantine while awaiting further test results, Sam’s recovery is underway. Rescuers call his survival a miracle—and a powerful reminder for bird owners to take extra precautions.
