A Chattanooga police officer is being praised after helping rescue a family from a burning apartment building in Hixson, Tennessee. Newly released body camera footage from the Chattanooga Police Department shows Officer Eli Rogers rushing into the smoke-filled building after neighbors alerted him that people were still trapped inside.
Despite visible flames near the front entrance, Rogers entered the building and carried four-year-old Marlowe Blaylock to safety. Her mother, Rachel Blaylock, followed with her 10-year-old son, Charles, as they escaped the dangerous scene. Rachel later shared that she had been worried about getting both children down the stairs and was grateful Rogers immediately stepped in to help.
The video also shows Rogers using a fire extinguisher to battle the flames before firefighters arrived. Thankfully, no one was injured. While the family lost their home and many belongings, they credit neighbors and Officer Rogers for helping save lives during the terrifying ordeal.
