Written by on December 21, 2023

When it comes to movies there are sometimes stories behind some of the most iconic scenes. Improvisation and sudden script changes have caused changes that have taken movies in altogether different directions. We sit and watch and wonder at times: how did they come up with that? How did they pull off that effect? Who was REALLY doing that stunt? The last one is only clear when it’s a Tom Cruise movie because the man does all of his own stunts. All of them. So here’s some trivia on one of the best Christmas movies of all time, Home Alone. Show everyone how smart YOU are with some trivia this weekend!

Joe Pesci deliberately avoided Macaulay Culkin on-set, because he wanted Culkin to think he was mean.

Macaulay Culkin’s stunt double was a very short 30-year-old man.

The scene in which Kevin is buying a toothbrush was the first scene that was shot for the movie.

During his barefoot scenes, Daniel Stern wore rubber feet. (Scene when he stepped on a nail going up basement steps)

Angels with Filthy Souls, the gangster movie Kevin is seen watching, isn’t real. So don’t bother trying to find it. The sequel, Angels with Even Filthier Souls, featured in Home Alone 2 isn’t real either…They were made specifically for the scenes where Kevin was watching them

Catherine O’Hara revealed in 2014 that Macaulay Culkin still calls her “Mom”.

Director Chris Columbus would ask Joe Pesci to do his “How am I funny?” speech from Goodfellas (1990) on-set. In fact, Pesci was to have a similar scene with Daniel Stern, defensively questioning him about having an edge. This scene was deleted.

The poster and video box image of Kevin with his hands on his face and screaming was improvised by Culkin. He had forgotten to pull his hands away as he screamed. This became the most famous shot of the movie.

The shovel wielding neighbour, Old Man Marley wasn’t even part of the script, and was added in at the suggestion of director Chris Columbus.

Macaulay Culkin drew the map that his character uses to set up the traps

The line “You guys give up, or are you thirsty for more?” was improvised.
