COULD A MILE-LONG FLOATING CITY BECOME A REALITY?

Written by on June 2, 2026

A bold vision from the 1990s is making waves once again. Freedom Cruise Line International has revived plans for the Freedom Ship, a massive floating city designed to carry 80,000 people around the globe.

If built, the vessel would be nearly a mile long, 800 feet wide, and rise 30 decks high. The ship would accommodate 50,000 permanent residents, 10,000 guests, and 20,000 crew members, creating a self-contained community at sea. Planned amenities include hotels, schools, a research hospital, museums, an aquarium, a water park, a casino, and even a 15,000-seat sports stadium.

Unlike traditional cruise ships, the Freedom Ship would spend most of its time in international waters, completing a full trip around the world every two years while passengers travel to shore via smaller boats.

The concept has resurfaced several times over the past three decades but has never moved beyond the planning stage. The biggest obstacle remains securing the estimated $12 billion needed to bring the ambitious project to life.
