One of cinema’s most infamous villains is back. Javier Bardem takes on the role of Max Cady in Apple TV+’s new 10-episode adaptation of “Cape Fear,” premiering Friday with its first two episodes.
Originally portrayed by Robert Mitchum in 1962 and Robert De Niro in the acclaimed 1991 remake, Cady remains one of film’s most terrifying antagonists. This new version follows a wealthy Savannah family whose lives are torn apart when Cady, exonerated after serving 17 years in prison, begins a calculated campaign of revenge.
Starring Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson, the series blends the classic psychological thriller elements fans expect with modern fears including social media, surveillance technology, artificial intelligence, and true-crime culture.
Showrunner Nick Antosca describes the project as a “nightmare remix” that honors previous versions while creating something fresh for today’s audiences. Executive producers Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg helped guide the project, which aims to deliver a deeper, slower-building sense of paranoia and family devastation than the films ever could.
