Granger Smith 1 year after son’s death, overcoming grief

Written by on July 2, 2020

It’s been just over a year since Granger Smith lost his 3 year old son, River, to a drowning accident. June 4, 2019, Smith was playing in the yard of their home outside Georgetown, Texas, with River, his brother Lincoln, now 6, and sister London, now 8, while his wife Amber took a shower inside. As Granger’s attention was turned to his older kids, he didn’t notice that River somehow broke through the pool fence gate’s child-proof lock and headed into the water, just 20 feet away from him. Sadly, River lost his life two days after being placed on life support.

The Smiths have a lifelong journey ahead of them to find purpose in their son’s death. A gift of continued life to two donor recipients was the first step. Just three weeks later, they took another step, donating $218,000 to the children’s hospital in River’s honor.

We’ve been on quite the journey these past few weeks. I’ve been dark on social media, but I still have a full understanding of the responsibility placed upon me as a public figure. I can choose to snuff that influence, or instead use my platform (in relevancy big or small) towards what I believe is right. I believe I’m obligated on certain levels to include you guys in my current journey, as I’ve been involved either personally or musically in yours. – The finality and mortality brought on by death makes life feel fragile. It can weaken, terrify and separate those close to it. But it can also awaken us. It can remind us never to take a moment with those we love for granted. – In my house, we have united stronger and closer than we’ve ever been. We’ve cried. We’ve smiled. I’ve held my family tight. I’ve found strength from God and used that in the face of adversity so that my wife and children can rely on me. I’ve guarded my heart and my mind during weak moments and graciously accepted all of the encouragement and empathy from so many. I have realized that I will not slave over a search for answers, but instead for meaning. I will focus and then cultivate the light from a dark place, the good from the bad, God’s will from my own plans. I can rest assured knowing that River’s assignment on earth was always intended for 1116 days and not only did he live it to the fullest, but he lived it loved by so many, including a mother, father, sister and brother who held nothing back and have no regrets on how much he felt that love. We should all be so blessed to be able to live like Riv. – Amber and I want you to hear it from us and not just read it, so we made this little video for you to watch. (Link in bio)Thank you for all the love, prayers and support. We feel it!

As Granger said in a recent article with People Magazine, “he learned other cruel lessons too late: that children can drown in less than 30 seconds and that other safety precautions — a second lock on the pool gate, an alarm to signal an unsupervised entry into the water — might have saved River’s life.”

So @amberemilysmith posted this pic from today. I read her caption. I’m blown away (again) by her testimony. I literally asked her…can you send me that pic and that caption? I wouldn’t change a word of it. . Life is fragile and precious. Take the photos, but also be in the moment. Eat the cake, but also take care of your health. Dare mighty things, turn the music up and dance, say I love you. Pray about everything and try to worry about nothing. Think before you speak or type. Lift people up. This world will knock you down a time or 2 (or 10). Get back up. Keep fighting the good fight. Be happy for others, even when things may be hard for you. Try making God the first person you talk to before you start your day. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Love fiercely and choose joy anytime you can. Romans 12:12 ❤️?
