WISCONSIN RECYCLING CENTER POSTS UNUSUAL SPEED LIMIT SIGN
Written by Jesse Skelley on April 30, 2026
A recycling center in Wisconsin is turning heads—and slowing drivers down—with a speed limit that’s anything but ordinary. Outagamie County Recycling and Solid Waste in Appleton recently installed a sign setting the limit at a very specific 17.3 mph, and it’s quickly դարձել a conversation starter.
So why 17.3? According to officials, the unusual number is intentional. It’s designed to snap drivers out of autopilot and make them pay closer attention behind the wheel. In a busy environment where haulers, contractors, and residents are constantly moving through the site, that extra moment of awareness can make a big difference.
Program coordinator Jordan Hiller says the sign has sparked an unexpected uproar, but that’s exactly the point. If people are talking about it, they’re thinking about it—and hopefully driving more carefully.
While it may seem quirky at first glance, the message is serious: safety comes first, even if it takes a little creativity to get there.
