THE LONGEST CURRENT WIN STREAK IN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL HAS ENDED

Written by on September 6, 2021

Wow! That’s the most you really can say when you look at the incredible run the Caledonia Warriors had in football. They won 71 straight games including the regular season and the playoffs and 5 Minnesota State Championships since 2015. The last game they lost? Back in 2014 to the BOLD Warriors in the playoffs. I call the games for Caledonia on our Classic Hits station 94.7 and I’ve seen a lot of Warriors games: all victories, almost all Caledonia was in full control, and 2 state championship games at US Bank Stadium. Even in the 3 game pandemic shortened year they pretty much dominated. And the majority of those games were blowouts. So it was a “back to earth” moment on Friday night as the Warriors took the field against the Lake City Tigers in their first game of the 2021 season. The teams traded touchdowns and a missed extra point each in the first half off of big plays by their offenses. In the second half though the Warriors couldn’t get going consistently and turned the ball over to the Tigers too many times. The Tigers scored 17 unanswered point in the second half to secure the victory and put their names on the trivia card as the team that ended the streak. The Tigers and their fans stayed at the field for a long time after the end of the game to revel in their own moment. This was a great game to watch and to call as both teams played really well! It was a great run and some people may think how sad it is to end, but I think those trophies they have in the case at their school have the Warriors smiling regardless of something that was going to end someday. The big picture though is that they got to play and fans were there and everything just felt normal. I’m going to concentrate on that even more than the win or loss.
